    ------------------------------------------------------------

ASTON VILLA boss John Gregory has resigned as manager of the club after spending nearly four years in charge at Villa Park.
The board have said that the split was amicable and that Gregory blamed the presuure of the job as his main reason for leaving.

Johne Deehan and Stuart Gray will take over first team affairs while the board get set to search for a new manager.

Chairman Doug Ellis said that he was saddened by Gregory's sudden announcement, and was keen to wish him well in the future and thank him for his efforts.

"John's resignation is sad, was most unexpected but has been amicable," Ellis said on the club's website.

"I can understand how John feels regarding his need for a break and this is a reflection on the pressures that managers endure in modern day Premier League football.

"I personally wish John and his family well in all they do in the future and he will always be welcome at Villa Park.

"We will not rush into a replacement appointment as John and Stuart both have previous management experience."

The relationship between Gregory and 'deadly' Doug Ellis has become increasingly strained this season as the manager has not been handed the funds to strengthen his side.

Gregory topped the table early on in the season, and was keen to add to his squad to sustain a challenge for a European place, but this was denied by the board and Villa have since slipped down the table.

Muzzy Izzet, Andy Cole and Robbie Fowler were just three of the players Gregory missed out on due to lack of funds, and he was frustrated by the fact that he would have to sell one of his prize assets in order to bring in any new faces.

The chairman and the manager were also at odds when it was reported that Ellis had lined up Louis van Gaal as his replacement, and a lack of trust between the two seemed to be exposed.

The club and Gregory have not made any further statements, but the hunt will start immediately for a successor to Gregory.

Nojah, umbes nagu 1997.a. yks teine manager, kelle klubi oli samuti suht heal positsioonil. Kas Stuart Gray on seesama Stuart Gray, kes m6ni kuu tagasi Southamptonist kinga sai? Ja otse loomulikult k2ivitub nyyd loterii treenerikoha t2itmiseks. Ise pakun favoriidiks David Moyes't. Must hobune - Louis van Gaal.

Gregory quits Villa citing pressure of job

        Thursday 24th January 2002

John Gregory has quit as coach of Aston Villa after nearly four years in charge. Chairman Doug Ellis said: "John's resignation is sad. It was most unexpected, but has been amicable."

Outspoken former England midfielder Gregory, who succeeded Brian Little in the post, has been critical of the Villa board for failing to back him in the transfer market .

He was especially frustrated that no money was available to sign Muzzy Izzet from Leicester City earlier this season.

Ellis added: "I can understand how John feels regarding his need for a break and this is a reflection on the pressures that managers endure in modern-day Premier League football.

"I personally wish John and his family well in all they do in the future and he will always be welcome at Villa Park."

Assistant bosses John Deehan and Stuart Gray will take over team affairs until the Villa board consider applicants for the head coach role. "We will not rush into a replacement appointment as John and Stuart both have previous experience,” said Ellis.

Gregory, whose contract at Villa had 18 months to run, now enters the running for the vacant position across the Midlands at Derby County, although he clearly fancies a break from the game.

Villa narrowly missed out on European qualification in all three of Gregory's full seasons at the club, finishing sixth in 1998-99 and 1999-2000, then eighth last May.

He was pilloried for spending £9.5 million on River Plate forward Juan Pablo Angel mid-way through last season as the Colombian struggled to acclimatise to English football.

But his record signing has flourished this campaign and shot Villa to the top of the Premiership early on, before the chasing pack engulfed them during a run of one win in 11 games.

Villa currently lie seventh in the Premiership – again just outside the European spots. Gregory also took Villa to the 2000 FA Cup final, where they lost 1-0 to Chelsea.

It is nonetheless hard to overstate what a surprise Gregory's appointment was in February 1998.

Like his predecessor Little, he played for the club in the 1970s. He was a useful utility player who made 76 appearances, but not a full blown claret-and-blue legend like Little.

He won six England caps while with Queens Park Rangers, but his first venture into management, at Portsmouth, was an unmitigated disaster. Little gave him his route back into management as part of his coaching team, first at Leicester City, then at Villa Park.

Gregory was an important member of the staff behind Villa's highly successful 1995-96 season and it was noted in some quarters that Little's team began to lose some of their drive and style from the time Gregory accepted the opportunity to manage Wycombe Wanderers in autumn 1996.

That point was obviously also noted by members of the Villa board – secretary/director Steve Stride is said to have been a particularly avid supporter – but nothing Gregory did at Wycombe suggested a nascent managerial genius.

Jah, Derbysse ta läheb. Derby'l ju raha jalaga segada...

Minu meelest on see hea uudis Villa fännidele.

A ma lugesin t2na, et kihlveokontorite favoriit pidi olema Grahami George. Pole vist eriti r66mus perspektiiv?

Tuleb välja et "PRESSURE ON THE JOB" on Ellise välja mõeldud põhjus... nüüd nati pikemalt inglise keeles

                        -------------------------------------------------------

John Gregory has blasted the Aston Villa statement claiming he quit as coach due to the "pressure of the job" and admitted he left after falling out with Doug Ellis.

"The relationship between myself and the chairman completely broke down," he said. "The statement issued by Aston Villa is rubbish. I have no problems with the pressure."

Gregory, currently on holiday in New York, added that there was no £1 million pay-off, as newspapers claimed on Friday. "I have gone from Villa without taking a penny," he revealed.

The Derby County target even rang a Birmingham radio station to tell their head of sport, Tom Ross, the real reasons why he was leaving.

Ross said: "John rang me and said he is absolutely devastated. He has been in tears because he is no longer the manager of Villa. It really has hit him hard."

Gregory's frustration at failing to land Diego Forlan – and seeing him sign for Manchester United – after again being told there was no money for players was the final nail in the coffin.

He came to the decision that with no financial backing he had taken Villa, lying seventh in the Premiership, as far as he could go.

Speculation that Ellis had approached Louis van Gaal to replace him also infuriated Gregory, who believed the reports despite denials from his chairman.

Gregoryt pakutakse ju Derby uueks bossiks.
