Tarmo In Squad For Ipswich Opener
NEW boy Tarmo Kink joins up with his new team-mates today and will go straight into Boro's squad to add much-needed width for Saturday's big opener against Ipswich Town, says Gordon Strachan.
The 24-year-old goalscoring left midfielder signed a three-year Boro contract last week after agreeing personal terms and passing a medical.
And while the Estonian has missed out on Boro's intensive pre-season training regime, the manager expects him to be up to speed with his new team-mates in no time.
"The great thing is that his fitness levels are already high so he'll go straight into the squad for the match against Ipswich," Strachan confirmed.
"He's already scored three goals for his Hungarian club in European competition, so he's fired up. He would have joined us in Germany last week but he's been suffering from a virus and so we decided to give him time to recover."
Kink comes to Boro for an undisclosed fee from Hungarian top flight club Gyori ETO and is Strachan's sixth signing of the summer.
The squad returned to Teesside late last night after their two-game German mini-tour and they'll be back at Rockliffe Park for training this afternoon.
While the manager was pleased with aspects of his side's performances against Sachsen Leipzig and Union Berlin, he believes Kink will improve Boro's delivery from wide areas, one aspect he knows needs to improve.
"We're glad that we've been able to bring in Tarmo," he said. "He offers us something we don't have at the moment. We're still a bit lacking in width, you could see that in Germany, but we have players that can come back in and give us something.
"Tarmo is different from what we've already got. He can give you natural width, he plays off the left-hand side and his goalscoring record is good and I'm trying to make sure my team is full of goals.
"So hopefully we'll get the best out of him. He won't have any problems settling in."
Capped 46 times by his country, Tallinn-born Kink scored 15 goals in 40 games for Gyori after signing from Lavadia two years ago, where 80 appearances brought 35 goals following a short spell in Russia with Spartak Moscow.
Kink may be part of the squad training at the Riverside on Tuesday afternoon when the club holds an open session at the stadium with access exclusive to Boro Season Card Holders and Boro Pride members.
