Avatud elektriturg tähendab seda, et võid oma elektri osta iga pakkuja käest, kes turul on. Varem (kaasa arvatud praegu) ostsid sa oma elektri selle pakkuja käest, kelle kaablid sulle majja tulid. Ehk siis sõltuvalt elukohast oli elektrimüüa üheselt määratud.
Näiteks Läänemaal ja Viimsis pakkus elektrit Fortum ja Tallinnas Eesti Energia. Nüüd võib Läänemaa inimene endale elektei osta ka mujalt kui Fortumi (uue nimega Imatra Elekter) käest ja Tallinna inimene ei pea Eesti Energia käest ostma.
