Teine poolaeg oli just selline, mida oleks tahtnud alates avavilest näha. Koheselt mindi teist väravat otsima, mis saadi kiirelt kätte. Esmalt Messi teine värav 50. minutil ja kolm minutit hiljem Pique peaga löödud värav otse nurgalöögist, mida viimati sai näha 9 kuud tagasi Puyoli poolt. Barca tõesti ei pressi nii nagu varem, aga see pole nüüd küll kinni mingis galactico teemas. Esiteks Ibra osteti Laporta ajal. Teiseks on Suarez sarnane Villale ja Pedrole ehk käib isukalt alati kaitsjatele peale. See, et hetkel tal mäng ei jookse on kinni väravapõuas ja õige positsiooni puudumises. Kolmandaks pole ei Xavi ega Iniesta kõvemad kaitses rügajad kui Rakitic, lihtsalt treeneri joonis on teine ja meeskonnal pole piisavalt sügavust, et hooaega läbivalt hullu panna. For simplicity sake Barca hasn’t stopped pressing. In this article the author himself said "Of the many changes to have taken place at Barcelona under Luis Enrique, perhaps the most notable is their transformation from one of the most ideologically rigid and aggressive pressing units around into a more flexible team, capable of playing in different ways against different opponents."

Before I continue i just want to point out that the author alluded to players like Henry and Ibra being an issue so to clear things up a bit; Henry signed for us in the 2007-08 season under Laporta and Rijkaard while Ibra signed in 2009-10 under Laporta and Guardiola. Both played under Pep.
Barca has signed global stars long before Sandro Rosell. Adding stars to our line up isn’t the problem. They have to have the right attitude and be tactically fluid to be able to grasp our tactics used.
Henry was part of the 2008-9 treble. He was a hit and suited our system even under Guardiola and tiki-taka and its requirements….remember the Henry, Eto’o, Messi triumvirate?
Zlatan was a self-made miss and in my opinion his ego prevented him from succeeding under Guardiola, he was ousted by Bojan. This part I agree with…
So now our press is no longer full time or by the entire team. Barca press/drop off in cycles which is contingent on the game, who the opposition is and what tactics they use.

I think the question should be why do we press and why have we stopped pressing the way we did under Guardiola-Vilanova?

Going back a bit, no coach has had full autonomy since Guardiola. Reason being, prior to Pep’s appointment we were in a downward spiral, no trophies for about two seasons, the club was desperate and gambled on Pep; who tweaked our system (sold old stars, promoted La Masia youth, bought new stars) and brought a winning formula, ushering in our most successful period while keeping core elements that made us Barcelona. Since then the club has logically wanted to stay as close to that system and its tactics as possible. Also the part about the press making us tired by time the business end came around is questionable seeing that we went on a trophy winning spree under Guardiola and defended our Liga title under Tito using the same system, with the team press in effect.

Why do we press?
Barca press high up the pitch to win Possession as close to the opponent’s goal as often as possible, as catching an unprepared defense sets up a better goal scoring chance. So we know why we press.
Why did we stop press like we did under Pep-Tito?
The high full team press naturally pulls our entire team higher up the pitch. Condensing the game into the opposition half. When done properly its a devastating tactic. But football is action and reaction and as I recall our style was notably exposed in 2009-10 by Mou with Inter, then by CFC in 2011-12 and then Bayern 2012-13 all in the Champions League. We had Liga setbacks as well.
Many teams had tried to sit deep and defend but they just had a generic and vague idea. Mou had a specific tactics to deal with our tactics. He had the profile of players and the tactics to contain and beat us (same for CFC and FCB) Teams now had a blue print on how to beat us. Even minnows could do it when executed properly off of sheer will and determination combined with their minimal individual technique/skill. They found ways to exploit our weaknesses like our not too athletic MF, our very high defensive line, over commitment to attack – few defenders at the back if the press failed, defenders who are more attackers etc.

Many fans seem to forget that football like life keeps progressing. Its about staying ahead of the pack through innovation or raw talent (hence the arms race) There is no one right way or one right system that guarantees success. Systems, formations and tactics come and go; the early days of 1-1-8 or 1-2-7 formations , the Danubian School 2-3-5 during the 1920-30’s, The WM 3-2-2-3 of the mid 1920’s, the Metodo 2-3-2-3 during 1930’s, Cantenaccio, Total Football, to modern times with the 4-4-2 and its many variants eg 4-4-2 diamond/4-4-1-1 and now the default formation 4-2-3-1. There have been innovation to go with the formation changes e.g the Libero, Trequartista, False 9, Double Pivots etc. Some dominate and stick around for years based on its tactical superiority, ease of adoption etc while others deliver unfavorable results or are found out and neutralized thus becoming unfavorable. Action and reaction.

The football world had reacted to our reaction…..we have to react again.
We had overdeveloped certain aspects of our game e.g to have possession in the opposition half. with a high defensive line. An intermittent press entices the opposition advance, giving our forwards space to rush into after we regain possession. We were forced to modify how we play. Enrique is forced to bring about some form of innovation while keeping certain elements of our ideology hence the broken press.

Its tough having a rigid ideology dictate to you. I actually embrace flexibility, lets hope it bears fruit. Visca el Barca.
