Minu arust on särk kena. Eriti just väravavahi oma. Aga jah, see logo, siin pole vist midagi nagu öelda

The Football Club That Time Forgot

The facts don\'t lie.And neither does the table. Aston Villa have just finished their worst ever Premiership season.

Over 38 games, Villa amassed a whopping 42 points - just eight points clear of the relegation zone. Had Birmingham City won the two Second City derbies this season, the two clubs\' positions would have been reversed.

No Aston Villa manager has survived a bottom-half finish since the advent of the Premiership. And yet David O\'Leary seems disturbingly sure of his job, with even his chairman - the normally trigger-happy Doug Ellis - saying \"we are moving in the right direction\".

That direction, if you aren\'t sure, is down.

Down from sixth in O\'Leary\'s first season to tenth in his second, and then down another six places this time. And O\'Leary\'s take on the situation?

\"From Christmas onwards, the ambition was all about simply staying in this division and I\'m proud we\'ve achieved that. I\'m proud of this club and I\'ll be proud to be representing this area in the Premiership next season.\"

On December 31, Villa were 13th in the Premiership, but only ten points off fifth place. That means one of two things. Either O\'Leary was happy with not moving up the table from that position, or he is now lying about what his aims for the season were. Either is inexcusable.

When Villa finished sixth two seasons ago, they were in the running for the Champions League until the second-to-last game of the season. Throughout that season, O\'Leary told all who would listen that the club was overachieving, and that they would slip up.

It was okay, we thought. He might be saying that in public, but he must be telling the players on the training ground that they can push on and finish in the top four. Why not? As Everton proved the following season, anything can happen. But now, you have to wonder.

Villa\'s rivals often accuse the Holte End faithful of living in the past. But as any Liverpool fan will tell you, it\'s hard not to when your past is so glorious - and when the present is frankly so dull.

The legendary Billy Walker once said: \"About Villa Park itself hung an aura that seems almost to be visible. Most certainly it is there to be felt and I know of no other ground that has the same effect on one. Almost it seems to be peopled by ghosts - amiable ghosts whose job it is to breathe the great Villa spirit into generation after generation of ambitious youngsters who pass through the great gates to achieve a life\'s ambition; to wear the famous claret and blue of the great club.\"

That has gone. The opposite is true. A lack of ambition hangs around the club like smog hangs around Middlesbrough. And the finger of blame for all that can be pointed squarely at one man: Doug Ellis.

There are many reasons Villa fans dislike Ellis. There is the disgraceful way the club treated Tony Barton, the manager who delivered the European Cup, after his death. There is the mutilation of the Trinity Road stand, once, without doubt, the most beautiful in the country. There is the fact that the Witton Lane stand is now known to all outside Villa as the Doug Ellis Ctand.

There is the fact that Ellis took over the European Champions, and in nearly 25 years has turned them into also-rans, winning just two League Cups - the latest of which was a decade ago.

But most of all, there is the expectation of failure that has become the hallmark of his tenure.

In 2000, Villa reached the FA Cup Final, where they met pre-Chelsea Chelsea. Going into the game, Villa were the bookies\' favourites. But you\'d struggle to find twenty amongst the thousands of Villa fans who made the journey to the old Wembley who genuinely thought they would be celebrating at the end of the day.

So when Doug Ellis says in his programme notes before the last game of the club\'s worst-ever Premiership season that \"we are moving in the right direction\", there has to be some hope that he means him...moving in the direction of the exit door after a takeover.

It shouldn\'t be hard. There can be few clubs more attractive to a potential buyer than Aston Villa. No, stop laughing, I\'m serious. They have everything you could ever want.

For a start, not a penny of debt. What you see is what you get. Not many Premiership clubs can say that.

                  Secondly, a fantastic stadium.

And thirdly, a potentially massive fanbase to fill it.

Forget for a second that Villa are the most widely-supported club in the second biggest city in the country. Look at the bigger picture. They are, as David O\'Leary so proudly pointed out, the only Premiership team for more than 60 miles in every direction. That\'s all of Birmingham, Wolverhampton, Coventry, Leicester, the Potteries, Staffordshire, hell, even Dudley, without a top-flight local team. That\'s a lot of people to entice into a ground. There is no excuse for a Villa side playing even average Premiership football not to sell out 42,000 seats every week.

Added to that is the fact that David O\'Leary\'s halving of the wage budget may have left Villa with a skeleton-thin squad, but it means there\'s little outlay. No-one at the club needs to be shipped out because they\'re a drain on the wage bill. You can take them over, they have a decent-enough squad - mostly made up of young players who have come through the ranks - and then you can look to build.

So why, when the club have appointed agents to find a buyer, can\'t they be sold?

As always with Aston Villa, it comes back to Doug Ellis, who has turned down repeated bids for the club - the latest for £64million.

Under Ellis, Villa have gone from being champions of Europe in the eighties, via relegation, to a side just a couple of players away from the title in the early nineties. Then they became a side just a couple of players away from the top four. They\'re currently a side just a couple of players away from the top half.

But if Ellis doesn\'t sell soon, they could well turn into a club just a couple of players away from the Premiership.
