PROFILE - Ranieri bows out of Chelsea with head held high

LONDON, May 31 (Reuters) - Claudio Ranieri won many friends during his four-year tenure at Stamford Bridge for his dignity and humour under pressure and for his idiosyncratic English turn of phrase.

The 52-year-old Italian spent his last year in the shadow of constant speculation about how long he could last after Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich bought the club.

Abramovich paid off Chelsea\'s debts and then invested some 110 million pounds ($202 million) in new players, declaring he wanted to make the side the best team in Europe.

Ranieri, who earned a reputation as a team builder in Italy and Spain, insisted such ambitions would take time.

He exceeded his own expectations by taking Chelsea to the semi-finals of the Champions League and to second place in the premier league -- the club\'s best finish for 49 years -- but still could not win the confidence of the Chelsea hierarchy.

Every news conference brought a new wave of questions about who would take over and how he coped with the stress. \"It is normal,\" he would inevitably answer, shrugging.

He said he was schooled in Italian soccer where managers might change several times a season and where pressure was constant.

\"I will continue to work my way\" he told the reporters he affectionately labelled sharks as the new Russian broom swept through Stamford Bridge, dusting out chairman Ken Bates and introducing hot new chief executive Peter Kenyon.

Ranieri\'s way involved constant team rotation as he tried out combinations of his expensive, talented and multilingual new squad and forced players to rest. His methods earned him the title \"Tinkerman\" an epithet he embraced with enthusiasm.

BECAME UNSTUCK

Often his methods worked but he became unstuck against Monaco in the Champions League semi-final when hasty attacking substitutions unsettled the team in the first leg and they lost 3-1 against 10 men, before being beaten 5-3 on aggregate.

Despite being forced to compete for places in the squad and to adapt to different positions on the pitch, most players remained loyal.

\"The players like and respect the manager. It is unfortunate the speculation is always there. But... it makes us want to do well for him,\" England midfielder Frank Lampard said.

Lampard was a key component of the English backbone Ranieri said he intended to build when he took over from compatriot Gianluca Vialli in September 2000. Vialli had scandalised English soccer by picking a team consisting entirely of overseas players.

Ranieri admired the English spirit and work ethic in football and wanted to combine it with the best of the other styles of play he had worked with -- Italian technical ability and Spanish flair.

Though supremely articulate and witty in Italian, his English never reached Arsene Wenger or Gerard Houllier\'s fluency but he insisted the lingua franca on the training pitch was English.

UNDISTINGUISHED CAREER

Ranieri had by his own admission an undistinguished playing career as a defender with home side AS Roma, Catanzaro and Catania and he started his managerial work with semi-professional side Vigor Lamezia in Italy before moving to second-division Campania.

In 1987 he took on Sardinian Serie C side Cagliari and took the team via Serie B to the top flight over two seasons. From there he moved to Napoli where he promoted Gianfranco Zola, one of his best players later at Chelsea, from the reserves to replace Diego Maradona.

He failed to win a trophy with Napoli and moved to Fiorentina whom he took from Serie B to A in 1994, winning the Italian Cup in 1996. The Roman then tried his luck in Spain where he guided Valencia to the Spanish Cup in 1998.

Ranieri was lured to troubled Atletico Madrid but stayed only nine months under Jesus Gil, who later faced embezzlement charges and whose club were taken into judicial administration. Despite signing Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink who became the Primera Liga\'s top scorer and with whom he was reunited at Chelsea, Atletico were relegated.

Six months out of the game and Ranieri accepted Bates\'s invitation to join Chelsea.

Ranieri required total commitment from his players. When Joe Cole joined from West Ham he commented that he never worked so hard. Demonstrative on the training pitch, arms flailing he would urge and chivvy. Pitchside his favourite pose was arms crossed, face impassive.

Magnanimous in defeat, it was never his style to slam the referee, blame bad decisions or criticise his opponents. With impeccable manners and unfailing bonhomie, Ranieri charmed England\'s football establishment.

He never swelled the Stamford Bridge trophy cabinet, however.

With his powerful Russian boss impatient for honours, team building time simply ran out for Ranieri.

Minu isikliku arvamuse kohaselt polnud see Chelsea poolt eriti mõistlik otsus. Meeskonna edasiminek lõppenud hooajal oli märgatav ja mitte üksnes eelmisel suvel ostetud mängijatearmee tõttu.

Eks ta nii ole jah... juudipoiss muutus ahneks lihtsalt.

Ma ei kahtle selles, et Chelsea edu saavutab uue treeneri käe all, lihtsalt Roman tahab seda endale käepärasemaks teha - lihtsamakoeliseks (a la, lööd värva oled tubli, ei löö oled kusik, võidad tiitli oled tubli, ei võida anna raha siia).

geremi, makelele, lampard, cole, duff, robben, parker. kõrvale jäid stanic, petit aga smertin, mainimata ei saa jätta lahkunud veroni ja lahkuvat gronkjaeri.

igatahes teeb see kokku kuus maailmaklassist poolkaitsjat. kui nüüd veel tuleks gerrard ja ehk ka deco (kuigi bbc väidab, et esimese tulek välistaks teise, võib abramovitš ka kaks korda käe rahakotti pista...), oleks chelseas 8!! tõeliselt head poolkaitsjat.

aga mourinho ju ütles, et hakkab tööd tegema väikese meeskonnaga (23 mängijat). 8 tippklassist poolkaitsjat ja kuskil viiskümmend väravavahti vaevalt tema plaanidesse mahuvad. on siis tõesti alust juttudel, nagu hakkaks cudicini/parker/duff lahkuma?
