THE GERMAN WHO BECAME A BRITISH HERO
IT is a moment that has become sporting legend. Seventeen minutes from time in the 1956 FA Cup Final, Manchester City goalkeeper Bert Trautmann dives at the feet of onrushing Birmingham City striker Peter Murphy. As the players collide, Trautmann saves the shot but the attacker’s knee smashes into his head, skewing his neck horribly and knocking him unconscious.
The trainer is called on to the pitch, Trautmann is revived and, with no greater treatment than a dabbing with a “magic sponge”, he sees out the game to the end, even making several other heroic saves to preserve City’s 3-1 lead and help them win the trophy. As he received his winner’s medal, Prince Philip asked him why his head was crooked. Trautmann smiled. “Stiff neck,” he said.
It was not until three days later that the full extent of Trautmann’s “stiff neck” was diagnosed. An X-ray showed that the second of five fractured vertebrae had split in two. He had survived only because he had been hit with such force that the third vertebrae had slammed against it, wedging it fast. The doctor’s opinion was unequivocal: “You should be dead.”
Incredibly, winning the FA Cup with a broken neck is not the most remarkable thing about Bert Trautmann. As a new book about his life is published, the full story of the man Gordon Banks, England’s World Cup winning keeper, described as a boyhood hero makes for astonishing reading. Before his time with City, Trautmann was a former Hitler Youth member, a paratrooper with the Luftwaffe who was decorated with the Iron Cross (first class) for bravery on the Russian Front and a prisoner of war. When he joined City in 1949 there were huge protests against the signing of a former Nazi; by the time he left, he was a hero. In 2004 he was appointed an honorary OBE, making him almost certainly the only man ever to receive both an Iron Cross and the Order of the British Empire.
