PHIL Jones is ready to hand Blackburn Rovers’ Premier League relegation fight a massive boost after declaring himself fit for the season run-in.
Rovers’ prized asset has been out of action with a knee injury since mid December but, ahead of next weekend’s crucial visit of Blackpool, Jones is now being considered for a timely return.
The Lancashire Telegraph also understands England under 21 boss Stuart Pearce wants to include him in his squad for the international game against Iceland at Preston at the end of this month as he looks to get him ready for the summer European Championship campaign.
Manager Steve Kean will resist any temptation to rush Jones back before he is ready but, after an impressive last week of full training, the 19-year-old is understood to be closing in on a return to the first team squad for the clash with the Tangerines.
Jones has emerged as one of England’s hottest young prospects after exploding onto the Premier League and England under 21 scene over the past 12 months.
The defender, who Arsenal had an £8million bid for turned down in the summer and who Chelsea enquired about in January, has not been available to Kean since injuring his knee in the manager’s first game in charge, a 1-1 draw with West Ham back on December 18.
It was initially feared the subsequent knee surgery would rule him out for the majority of the season but after a strong rehabilitation period, Jones is now expected to play a key role in the season finale.
He will be closely monitored over the next few days before Kean makes a final decision on Saturday’s squad, but the return of Jones would provide everyone around Ewood with a crucial lift.
Jones’ return would provide Kean with a selection dilemma, especially in the absence of the injured Gael Givet for Blackpool’s visit.
A surprise inclusion in the starting line-up would allow a defensive reshuffle to keep Martin Olsson in a more attacking midfield role, although he is more likely to have to settle for a place on the substitutes bench.
Jones has already vowed to return stronger than ever after going through an intensive rehabilitation programme with staff around Brockhall delighted with his recovery process.
With nine games of the campaign to go and Rovers just a point clear of the drop zone, Jones’ return will provide Kean’s squad with a fresh injection of injury after he made a sensational start to the campaign.
Fellow crowd favourite David Dunn is still facing a battle against injury in time for the crunch Blackpool game but, with Ryan Nelsen back from New Zealand, Rovers’ squad is looking in good health for a vital next couple of months.
