Love United

At the moment, very obviously, he seems to be chosing results over style. And he's getting the results, you can't deny that.
So it's not a case of replacing a problem with another, it's replacing a big problem - losing but playing good football - with a small problem: playing bad football with good results. Not a bad choice imo, because of the injuries, and also the fact that we lack one or two great players to play 'good football' and being balanced at the same time. And then there's always the chance that our play improves with the 3-5-2, as a bonus.
Now if you look at his history he has nothing to prove in terms of playing 'good football'. It's what his teams are known for, more than for the trophies he's won actually. So my guess is Van Gaal probably feels that it's not a problem to let his team play great football, he knows the recipe for that. He just wants results before anything, because it's his first season here and results (qualifying for CL) decide wether he can stay another year. And given the insane competition I think it is a wise choice, because like I said the Arsenal way is the easy way out. Winning nothing, but at least you can say you play good and entertaining football.
veel üks:
It's not like we set the world on fire whenever we played with a back four either, people seem to forget that. We conceded five vs Leicester, we were biting our fingernails during the last stages of our games against Everton, WHU and Stoke and we were awful to watch against WBA and Crystal Palace. We had some good games, like the ones vs QPR and Hull at home, but so we did with the 3-5-2.
Now, i don't think that LvG is that stubborn, i can't call arrogant and stubborn a man who has played with a back four in half of our league games and with a back three in the other half. To me it seems like a manager who is still struggling with his squad and he trying to think of new ways to create the right balance in our team.
Some keep asking what is the point of playing with three men at the back when the opposition's game plan is to sit back and defend with ten men behind the ball. I believe the answer is pretty simple, our opponents (still) find it way too easy to run through our midfield and get the ball into our third. We don't have runners in our midfield and the only player we have who can be aggressive, close down opponents and press to regain possession, Fellaini, isn't mobile enough. Almost every team we face tries to get players on the backs of our CMs, in between our lines, and run at our exposed defenders who can do nothing more than drop deeper and deeper.
In other words we risk getting hit on the counter. That's why LvG wants the third CB to provide cover so that none of our defenders gets isolated with the opposition player running straight at him. One can argue that we should keep our CMs deep and use the wings to attack, like Sir Alex did. Well, LvG's strategy is different, he likes his midfielders to be more active and he wants his players able to press in the midfield to get the ball.
This brings me to what i believe is the main problem, either we play 3-5-2 or 4-4-2. We can't keep possession in the attacking third. Our creative players and our forwards can't win a single duel, they hesitate to dive into challenges and they get dispossessed way too easily. This is why i think we can't get more players in advanced positions and close the opposition into their box. It's amazing how things improved yesterday and how many times Rooney found opportunities to move up into QPR's third once Fellaini came on and we had someone who could protect possession.
There's also one thing that makes me believe that, despite what the majority of the fans think, LvG is trying to make the back four work. In yesterday's game we saw a new defensive tactic when we switched to 4-4-2. Whenever we lost possession high on the pitch, it was Rojo or Jones the player who drifted out of position, up in the midfield sometimes, to close down the first attacker and slow down QPR's attack with Carrick dropping deeper to cover the CB position. I think it worked quite well and we might be seeing more of that in the near future.
As for the "we are boring to watch" stuff, just take a look at the teams who will battle for the last two CL spots. Koeman has built Southampton's success on playing two inexhaustible "steam engines" who close down everyone and challenge for every ball in front of their back four. Take the 8-0 against Sunderland out of the equation and i believe they aren't that fun to watch. Of course they are the league's overachievers, so no one cares about that.
But it's not only them, Wenger seems to always have Flamini, or someone with mainly defensive duties in his midfield cause he knows that his defense can't handle much pressure, he wants to create a more compact side. And if it wasn't for Sanchez who knows where Arsenal would be right now. Even Liverpool managed to find a good momentum in the last matches. Did they start scoring one goal after the other? No, they simply found some stability at the back which allows them to get some 1-0, 2-1 wins. Tottenham, whenever i watch them, try to defend well and absorb pressure hoping that Kane and Erikssen will bail them out in the end.
I believe we should see one game at a time and base our criticism more on how close we get every week into a top four finish. Winning is the best way to build confidence in the squad and confidence is the prime prerequisite for attacking football that is pleasing to the eye.

No ma ei tea. Taga 4 mehega on see mängupilt ikka rohkem Manchester Unitedi moodi. See mingi tuim palli hoidmine ja söötmine järjekorras Blind-Rooney-Evans-Carrick-Rooney-Evans-Carrick-Rooney-pikk diagonaal kuskile ettepoole mida juba vastaste vasakkaitsja ootab ei ole päris see. Statistikat on võibolla tõesti ilus vaadata, meeletu pallivaldamis protsent.

Siin on kaks võimalust, kas SAF'i filosoofia jätkaja (Giggs, Phelan, Meulensteen) või totaalvoetbali jätkaja (Guardiola, De Boer? Koeman?).
Miks Giggs? Praegu õpib Van Gaali käe all, õpib veel nt ka järgmise treeneri käe all ning kuskil 10 a pärast (võib-olla varem) on tema Unitedi treener. Fergusoni lojaalseimate hulgas koos Neville'i, Scholesi ja Buttiga. Fännide lemmik, hea imago ning tugeva mainega mängija.
Phelan?
