Derby are expected to begin talks with John Gregory in the next 48 hours.
The Rams, seeking a successor for Colin Todd after he was sacked two weeks ago, have moved quickly to inform Gregory's agent, Paul Stretford, of their interest in the 47-year-old, who played for Derby in the mid-1980s.
Stretford said: "This morning I have been contacted by officials of Derby County and they have indicated their interest in John becoming their manager.
"With this in mind I am hoping to organise a meeting some time within the next 48 hours."
Meanwhile Atletico Madrid have denied rumours linking them with the former Villa boss.
The fallen Spanish giants are currently enjoying a revival under veteran coach Luis Aragones and look certain to return to La Liga next season.
An Atletico spokesman said: "We have absolutely no news about this at the moment. Everyone at the club is behind Luis all the way and we know absolutely nothing about Gregory."
