ASTON VILLA boss John Gregory has resigned as manager of the club after spending nearly four years in charge at Villa Park.
The board have said that the split was amicable and that Gregory blamed the presuure of the job as his main reason for leaving.
Johne Deehan and Stuart Gray will take over first team affairs while the board get set to search for a new manager.
Chairman Doug Ellis said that he was saddened by Gregory's sudden announcement, and was keen to wish him well in the future and thank him for his efforts.
"John's resignation is sad, was most unexpected but has been amicable," Ellis said on the club's website.
"I can understand how John feels regarding his need for a break and this is a reflection on the pressures that managers endure in modern day Premier League football.
"I personally wish John and his family well in all they do in the future and he will always be welcome at Villa Park.
"We will not rush into a replacement appointment as John and Stuart both have previous management experience."
The relationship between Gregory and 'deadly' Doug Ellis has become increasingly strained this season as the manager has not been handed the funds to strengthen his side.
Gregory topped the table early on in the season, and was keen to add to his squad to sustain a challenge for a European place, but this was denied by the board and Villa have since slipped down the table.
Muzzy Izzet, Andy Cole and Robbie Fowler were just three of the players Gregory missed out on due to lack of funds, and he was frustrated by the fact that he would have to sell one of his prize assets in order to bring in any new faces.
The chairman and the manager were also at odds when it was reported that Ellis had lined up Louis van Gaal as his replacement, and a lack of trust between the two seemed to be exposed.
The club and Gregory have not made any further statements, but the hunt will start immediately for a successor to Gregory.
