Tänud lugemise eest. Vahelduseks Babelfishile on tore inglise keelt lugeda. Nii ta paraku kipub välja tulema, et mitmeti mainitud Itaalia liiga langus on tulemas. Soccer scandal sucks in magistrates
Prosecutors scrutinized for suspect role in corrupt system
(ANSA) - Rome, May 17 - The biggest crisis in the history of Italian soccer has escalated with the news that the Justice Ministry is sending inspectors to check on the alleged role of two magistrates .

On Tuesday, outgoing Justice Minister Roberto Castelli authorised an internal inquest into the possible involvement of Pinerolo prosecutor Giuseppe Marabotto and Massa Carrara Judge Cosimo Ferri in an alleged web of sporting corruption .

The decision came after it emerged that the magistrates featured in wiretaps recorded by Naples prosecutors as part of a probe into allegations that former Juventus general manager Luciano Moggi led a criminal group which steered the 2004-05 championship in his team\'s favour .

Moggi is one of 41 people under judicial investigation in Naples for attempting to condition match results, along with former Italian Soccer Federation (FIGC) chief Franco Carraro, former FIGC vice president Innocenzo Mazzini, Lazio chairman Claudio Lotito and Fiorentina owner Diego Della Valle .

In one of the wiretaps, Marabotto asks Moggi to get Juventus tickets for a ministry inspector going to Pinerolo in order to \"sweeten him up\" .

On Wednesday Marabotto insisted nothing was amiss .

\"I was joking in the call,\" he said. \"I was presenting Moggi to a ministerial inspector who is a massive Juventus fan. He came to Pinerolo to check on the transmission of IT data, certainly not to examine my work\". Naples investigators also recorded conversations between Ferri and Lotito, and Ferri and Mazzini, which are said to allude to system of \"refereeing favours\" .

Ferri, who is also on FIGC\'s economic disputes commission, said he was not guilty of any \"irregular behaviour\" and was \"surprised and upset\" at Castelli\'s move. The Judiciary\'s self-governing body, the CSM, has launched an inquiry into these wiretaps too .

The Neapolitan prosecutors also recorded conversations Moggi had with outgoing Interior Minister Giuseppe Pisanu, although the content does not refer to anything illegal .

Prosecutors in Naples, Rome, Turin, Parma, Udine and Reggio Calabria are probing various aspects of the scandal, which has been dubbed \'Calciopoli\' (Soccerville) and \'Clean Feet\' - a reference to the \'Clean Hands\' or \'Bribesville\' corruption scandals of the early 1990s, which swept away much of the political establishment of the day .

According to Italian legal procedures, prosecutors must formally notify suspects they are being investigated but it does not necessarily mean they will then be indicted .

Rome prosecutors have been interviewing people from the game in recent days as part of their probe into GEA World, the footballers\' agency run by Moggi\'s son Alessandro .

GEA is being investigated for alleged use of \"threats and violence\" to coerce players and clubs into using its services and abuse of a \"dominant position\" on the market. On Wednesday Naples, Turin and Rome prosecutors met to exchange information and coordinate their efforts .

UEFA has warned FIGC that it will have to work quickly to discipline any guilty clubs, as it needs to know which Italian sides will take part in next season\'s European club competitions by the end of the upcoming World Cup .

Juventus risk being dumped from Serie A and the European Champions League and stripped of the 2005 and 2006 crowns .

Fiorentina and Lazio, which finished fourth and sixth in Serie A, may be relegated too and lose their respective places in the Champions League and the UEFA Cup. Milan, which is implicated in the scandal but less deeply than the other clubs, but could lose its Champions League slot as well. On Tuesday, Guido Rossi, 75, was appointed emergency commissioner of FIGC to replace Carraro, who resigned last week .

Rossi, a law professor from outside the soccer world, said he would look abroad for solutions to the unprecedented crisis .

\"(The system) of sporting justice is the first problem we\'ll have to work on,\" said Rossi, who has a track record of steering corporations out of crises .

Biscardi\'s Trial pulled over links to shamed Juventus
(ANSA) - Rome, May 17 - Italy\'s oldest and best-loved soccer talk show has become the latest victim of the biggest scandal in Serie A history .

The scandal revolves around allegations that former Juventus general manager Luciano Moggi led a criminal group which steered the 2004-05 championship in his team\'s favour. It was sparked by a string of criminal investigations and has already led to the resignations of the President and Vice President of the Italian Soccer Federation and the whole of the Juventus board .

The scandal has now also felled Aldo Biscardi, the veteran presenter of Il Processo di Biscardi (Biscardi\'s Trial), who announced his resignation on Tuesday .

The show\'s reputation was tainted by publications of phone taps of conversations between Moggi and Biscardi, and Moggi and Fabio Baldas - a former referee who acted as the expert commentator for action replays of controversial match incidents .

The wiretaps suggested that Moggi tried to influence the way the action replays were analysed so that it did not seem that Juventus had any favours from referees. Prosecutors in Naples are probing allegations that Moggi did in fact manage to organize \'friendly\' treatment for his side, via a network of collusive referees, line officials and referee-appointers .

Biscardi used Monday\'s show to rebut the allegations, arguing he did not put Moggi\'s orders into practice. But on Tuesday, the journalist said he and the head of the private channel La 7 had agreed he needed \"time out for reflection\" .

The announcement ended the 26-year history of a peculiarly Italian, immensely enjoyable, celebration of broadcasting anarchy fed by football news .

Biscardi started the show in 1980 with the intention of creating a televised version of the heated discussions that take place in bars across Italy every Monday in the wake of the previous day\'s action .

Panellists were allowed to be as blatantly biased as they liked in fighting their favourite team\'s corner, while raised voices, colourful language and wagging fingers were considered part of the fun .

The show had a stubbornly loyal audience, which included many of the country\'s top figures .

New Deputy Premiers Massimo D\'Alema and Francesco Rutelli, and former premiers Silvio Berlusconi and Giulio Andreotti are some of the political heavyweights that have been Biscardi\'s guests over the years .

\"I\'m really sorry (about Biscardi\'s resignation), both on a personal and professional level,\" said popular TV journalist Lamberto Sposini, a regular on the programme .

\"Whether you like it or not, Biscardi is a piece of sporting TV-journalism history\". Much of the show\'s appeal stemmed from Biscardi\'s never-ending enthusiasm for the game and his tireless crusades for footballing justice .

But having taken the moral high ground on many occasions made it difficult for the 75-year-old to ride out this storm .

One of his biggest campaigns was for the introduction of video officials in soccer - like those in other sports, such as rugby and cricket. Ironically, the use of video replays played a part in his downfall .

The fact that Marco Tronchetti Provera, a key stakeholder in La7, is also on the board of Juve rival Inter Milan will not have made Biscardi\'s position any easier .

\"I have to tell the truth, I haven\'t been watching Il Processo di Biscardi recently,\" said former Azzurri legend Sandro Mazzola .

\"I\'m sorry for Aldo, I\'ve known him for a long time, but I won\'t miss it\" .

Biscardi finished on a high though. Monday\'s show attracted 1.5 million viewers, 6.6% of the audience share, one of its best performances .

\"This record number of viewers shows that I have nothing to do with this affair, which has wounded me,\" Biscardi said .

\"We gave indisputable proof of this. Il Processo di Biscardi has never taken its audience for fools\". Not everyone thinks the veteran\'s career is over .

\"A presentator like Aldo Biscardi is comparable to a brand like (pasta producer) Barilla, with his nationwide popularity,\" said German media expert Klaus Davi, another regular on the programme. \"Brands often go through crises, but they are not necessarily permanent\"

2004. aastast on teada juhtum, kus Moggi pani pärast Juventuse kaotatud mängu Reggina Calciole kohtunik Gianluca Paparesta riietusruumi luku taha ja ähvardas, et järgmisel päeval jääb mees ilma oma juhilubadest.

Tagasiastumisest on teatanud nii Luciano Moggi ja klubi tegevdirektor Antonio Giraudo kui ka terve Juventuse nõukogu, kelle asemele klubi aktsionäride üldkoosolek valib 29. juunil uue koosseisu.
