Poom: England will qualify with Croatia

Estonia goalkeeper Mart Poom expects to be a busy man at the Le Coq Arena in Tallinn on Wednesday night and believes England have enough talent to secure qualification for Euro 2008.

The Group E outsiders have lost all of their Euro 2008 qualifiers so far, most recently going down 1-0 to leaders Croatia yesterday.

Having so far also failed to chalk up a goal, Estonia - managed by former Dutch Army coach Jelle Goes - are not expected to provide Steve McClaren's men with much trouble.

England desperately need a victory to put themselves back on course to reach Austria and Switzerland following a disappointing return of just 11 points from their six matches.

Veteran Poom has made more than 100 appearances for Estonia and will be a familiar face in the host's line-up having enjoyed spells with Derby, Sunderland and most recently Arsenal before joining Watford at the end of the season.

The 35-year-old feels England will soon be back in contention at the top of Group E.

'I still think England will go through along with Croatia,' Poom said.

'I know they have not had the best possible start, but they have got most of their big games left at home.

'With the new Wembley ready and 80,000 screaming fans it will be like a fortress for England.

'If you look at their players, they should go though.'

Poom told Arsenal TV On-line: 'I think it will be quite a one-sided game to be honest, so I will have to be on my toes and the defenders will have to have a good game.

'Our chances will come in the counter-attacks.

'Andres Oper, who plays in Holland, is our record-goalscorer and once had a trial with Arsenal, so hopefully he will also keep the England defenders occupied.'

Poom feels the tiny Le Coq Arena will provide a unique atmosphere on Wednesday night.

'It is our first ever specialised football stadium in Estonia,' he said.

'They have put some extra stands on it, so there is nearly 10,000 and the people are very close to the pitch and it can generate a good atmosphere.'

Head coach Goes took over from fellow Dutchman Arno Pijpers in 2004, having been in charge of the under-21s.

Despite calls for the manager to be axed following a poor campaign, Poom believes Estonia are heading in the right direction.

He said: 'When we started playing international football after becoming members of FIFA, back in 1991, we had to start from the basics and really just learn how to defend, because we were not good enough to just attack.

'Every point was a good result for us.

'After a while, the people back home wanted to see more attacking football.

'Now it is a case of trying to find the right medium.'

Poom added: 'We have a Dutch manager, and we try to play quite an attacking system.

'We try to be tight and compact at the back but also try to find ways to be positive on counter-attacks and with set-pieces.

'We just need to show more composure and confidence in front of goal.

'Whether people come to watch football in Estonia or England, they want to see a good game.'

Midfielder Frank Lampard has called for England's fans to get behind the team against Estonia on Wednesday.

England travel to Tallinn for a game they must win to get their Euro 2008 qualifying campaign back on track.

Lampard, who was booed by some fans in the 1-1 draw with Brazil on Friday, wants no repeat of the abuse they received away to Andorra in March.

He said: "It's not helpful to the team. It's a bit upsetting but you have to be big enough to take that."

The players and coach Steve McClaren came in for fierce criticism from angry fans as they struggled to see off minnows Andorra in Barcelona.

Lampard was absent from the line-up for that game but returned for the friendly with Brazil on Friday.

However, he became the latest player to be singled out by some England fans for abuse after a disappointing game.

"It's part of playing for England," said the 28-year-old, who has scored just once in his last 14 England appearances.

"A year ago I had just won their player of the year two times on the spin. That's how English football is.

"I've got no problem with it. I remember when people wanted David Beckham out of the team and he got a hero's welcome because he's a great player, he keeps working hard and that's what happens in football.
We've got a great squad and we want to start to performing and we want to start winning games
                          Frank Lampard

"At the World Cup I didn't score when people expected me to score so I'm fighting to get back in there knocking the goals in again."

It took 54 minutes for England to get the opening goal against Andorra before going on to secure a 3-0 win.

Lampard has pleaded with the fans to be patient in Estonia if they do not manage to get an early goal.

"In Andorra they showed their frustration and you'd have to be a fool not to recognise that," he said. "Estonia are a better team than Andorra, make no mistake about that.

"It is always difficult to travel in Europe and we have to prepare ourselves for a different game than against Brazil.

"You can't go out there thinking if we're not winning after 15 minutes it's no good. It's going to be a tough game.

"The only thing that matters after the game is winning the game. We want to do it well, we want to go one up after 10 minutes, but it might not be like that. If we show the passion and desire we showed against Brazil we can win the game.

"I think we know we're a good bunch of players, we've got a great squad and we want to start performing and we want to start winning games.

"The best thing we can take from Friday is pure confidence. Playing against some of the best players in the world - a great team - and matching them, playing as a team, showing what we can do.

"If we play like that against Estonia

Crouch set to win England recall

McClaren (left) is set to turn to Crouch to provide goals

                              Group E: Estonia v England
                              Date: Wednesday, 6 June
                              Kick off: 1930 BST
                              Venue: Le Coq Arena, Tallinn
Coverage: Live on Sky Sports and BBC Radio Five Live, highlights on BBC ONE at 2240 BST

Peter Crouch is in line to be recalled for England's Euro 2008 qualifier against Estonia on Wednesday.

England manager Steve McClaren has hinted Liverpool striker Crouch will partner Michael Owen in attack.

Crouch was left out of the starting line-up for the friendly against Brazil, but has scored five goals in six starts since McClaren took over.

McClaren said: "I said before the Brazil game that wasn't necessarily the team for Estonia."

England will be without the suspended Wayne Rooney in Tallinn and McClaren's experiment of pairing Owen with Manchester United's Alan Smith against Brazil failed to work.

McClaren said: "We'll have to look at certain things and digest it and it may be different from the line-up for the Brazil game."

Former England skipper David Beckham seems to have cemented his place in the England starting line-up to face the Group E minnows, who have yet to win a point or score a goal in their qualifying campaign.

Beckham was impressive on his recall to the England colours for the first time since England's 2006 World Cup exit, in the friendly against Brazil at Wembley.

McClaren will hope that Crouch will benefit from Beckham's delivery on crosses in a similar fashion to skipper John Terry, who headed England's first goal at the new Wembley stadium from one of his free-kicks.

The England manager warned his players to guard against complacency.

England boosted their confidence with the 1-1 draw against Brazil, but McClaren warned: "We have to ensure we get back down to earth and remind the players what their jobs will be."
If we do the job as we have done recently we expect to win
                              England coach Steve McClaren

Owen Hargreaves is injured so Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard look set to continue in midfield, supported out wide by Joe Cole and David Beckham.

Nicky Shorey will continue at left-back if Wayne Bridge's hip injury rules him out and Jamie Carragher's position at right-back will come under pressure from Phil Neville.

But McClaren is confident that if England repeat the level of performance they showed against Brazil they should beat Estonia.

"If the players do their jobs in a disciplined manner then you get a performance," added McClaren.

"All games are difficult at international level, especially away games, but it's not really about Estonia, it's about what we do.
