Portsmouth fans 'ugliest' as Liverpool land Premier League beauty crown

Nothing, not even the lasting euphoria of success in the FA Cup last
season, is likely to make Portsmouth fans feel any better about a new
survey that has 'revealed' the most and least beautiful fans in the
Premier League.

According to research by Sky HD, the south coast club have the least
attractive fans in English football’s top flight – but Liverpool have at
last landed a domestic title, being judged by scouts from model agency
D1 Model Management to have the sexiest supporters.

High definition footage, known as the scourge of Hollywood as it shows
up the flaws of celebrities, is four times clearer than traditional
television images, allowing Sky and D1 Model Management to study the
faces in the crowds from every Premier League match last season, and
rank the clubs in order of fans’ attractiveness.

Christian Cull, Sky’s director of customer communications, explained:
“With images so detailed, you can see faces in the crowd much more
clearly, so we had a bit of fun.”

Some of the best-looking fans have even been tracked down and offered
modelling contracts.

Dean Cleary-Patterson, the model scout responsible for the rankings,
said: “We typically take into account a whole range of aspects of a
person’s appearance, from the symmetry of their features to the
glossiness of their hair.”

Fulham fans’ follicles must be in peak condition, therefore, to bring
them in at No 2 in the beauty stakes.

Meanwhile, a Champions League victory and a successful defence of their
Premier League title last season will be of no consolation to Manchester
United supporters, as they suffer their first mid-table finish in years.

As for Portsmouth, Younes Kaboul could be inspired to reconsider his
move to the club, especially as White Hart Lane seems to be a bastion of
beauty. Indeed, the debate about whether or not Tottenham will break
into the 'Big Four’ can end now, as they come in third, ahead of fierce
rivals Arsenal.

Great Britain's performances declined after 1912, and its last appearance at the finals was in 1960, even if they participated in the qualifying competitions for the following tournaments. After 1974, when the Football Association abolished the distinction between "amateur" and "professional" football, Great Britain no longer entered the qualifying competition, and this continued after the change of format in 1984. The main obstacle these days to their participation is political, since the four UK nations - England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland - have separate international identities within FIFA, which includes a guaranteed position as Vice-Presidency on the FIFA Management Committee and have a 50% presence on the International Football Association Board (which sits annually to debate changes within the Laws of the Game), but compete together as Great Britain in the Olympics. Producing a single team for the Olympics may lead to calls for the UK's special four-team status to be abolished altogether. Now London has been selected as the host for the 2012 Games there will be considerable pressure for the UK to field men's and women's teams for those games, an idea the Welsh FA and Scottish FA have strongly refused, though the Northen Irish FA are less adamant. One suggestion to resolve this is for the four nations to play a tournament with the winning team going on to represent the UK in the Olympics, however the concern remains that a GB team would be too politically volatile.
