Surely, there is something that needs explaining here.
Mourinho, one of the greatest managers of the modern era, comes to United, one of the richest and most glamorous clubs in the world. The club is in a difficult situation but Mourinho has won titles everywhere and is the only man to have beaten Guardiola to a league title. Yet, after spending 400m on new players, Mourinho's team looks hopelss - both in terms of style and points. Why?
In short, because he is not willing to admit that his understanding of the game has been surpassed. But this doesn't say much. So let me explain.
To describe Jose as a pragmatic manager isn't quite wrong but does not go deep enough. Because Mourinho does have his own footballing philosophy and is in love with it. The rivalry with Guardiola and the new hipsters in football like Klopp is about much more than who is the best now. It is ultimately about who has a superior understanding of football.
For Jose, football is mostly about allowing/forcing the opposition to make mistakes when it has left spaces to exploit in its half. For him, the best way to play is to leave the opposition have the ball and hit it with fast transitions in free spaces ones it loses the ball. Here are the 7 golden rules:
1. The game is won by he who commits fewer errors.
2. Football favours whoever provokes more errors in the opposition.
3. Away from home, instead of trying to be superior to the opposition it’s better to encourage their mistakes.
4. Whoever has the ball is more likely to make a mistake.
5. Whoever renounces possession reduces the possibility of making a mistake.
6. Whoever has the ball has fear.
7. Whoever does not have it is thereby stronger.
Note two things:
(1) he is generally against possession based football.
(2) he is generally against high pressing.
Why is he against high pressing though? For several reasons. If you try to press high, you leave spaces that the opposition can exploit and you don't allow them to free themselves enough spaces for fast transitions and deadly counter attacks. Besides, high-pressing is physically taxing and might lead to more injuries. Hence, high pressing is a way of stopping the opposition that is less effective than defending zones, allowing the opposition to make mistakes when it has left behind huge spaces to be attacked.
So, Mourinho thinks that his seemingly passive approach is more intelligent and rewarding than the combination of possession and high pressing adopted by the "hipsters".
When he came to United he looked for recent examples of teams that were successful both against Barca and Dortmund. And he found such an example in Bayern Munich. What is different about Munich? Well, compared to Barca, they were a team of tall players. A team that relies on possession and high pressing is likely to be a team of midgets. City have the shortest team in the EPL. Bayern 2013 showed that they could beat a team of technically gifted midgets and they beat Dortmund as well.
Thus, Mourinho has become obsessed with height.
When you have giants, you can bypass the midfield battle and high pressing by hoofing the ball forward and tormenting the opposition with long balls and from set pieces.
Problem is, the experiment has failed. Mourinho hasn't found an answer to the new "hipster" tactics and in the process has been left behind by the next generation of managers. He isn't willing to adapt because he doesn't want to concede that his understanding has been surpassed and is a thing of the past.Kommentaar

Redcafe igatahes väga optimistlik pole . Ja kui nüüd võetakse Arsenalilt ploomid ja Mou peale seda järgmine hommik sacki ei saa siis on ikka midagi veel rohkem valesti kui seni võis arvata.

Kui vanasti Jose naeruvääristas Wengerit kes pidi eelarve võimekuselt suuruselt 4nda klubiga iga aasta tiitlivõitluses alla vanduma suurtele, kuid lõpetas sellest hoolimata alati top4 sees, siis nüüd on ta ise seisus kus tal on suuruselt teise eelarvega klubi liigas ja top4 on 'mircale'.
