Whites rein in loan deal for Horse

Leeds have signed much sought-after Sheffield United striker Geoff Horsfield on loan until Christmas with a view to a permanent move.

Horsfield will go straight into the Leeds squad for the opening Championship game of the season against Norwich at Elland Road.

Manager Kevin Blackwell said: \"We are going to take him on loan until Christmas to see how Geoff performs. If things go well we have got the option to complete something with Sheff United.

\"He is raring to go and it will be nice to see him in a white shirt. All being well he should be making his debut on Saturday.\"

          KEEPER ARRIVES

Fulham goalkeeper Tony Warner has joined Leeds United on a month-long loan deal.

The former Millwall favourite completed the formalities of his switch north on Friday morning and wil be plunged straight into the squad for the Coca-Cola Championship opener against Norwich tomorrow.

First-choice keeper Neil Sullivan is doubtful after suffering a dead leg at Nottingham Forest last weekend, and the new recruit is on stand-by.

32-year-old Tony started his career as an apprentice at Liverpool and has gone on to make almost 300 appearances in senior football.

Tony clocked up over 200 appearances with Millwall and also enjoyed a successful spell at Cardiff.

The loan agreement with Fulham will see Tony remain at Elland Road until August 28.

Njah, mittesihipärases kasutamises on ta kindlasti üks tugevamaid. Guardiani tüübid olid veidi kainemad ja nende eelvaates on võtmetegelaseks Eddie Lewis. Kusjuures mõlematel on Leeds favoriit automaatse edasipääsu peale. Samas kui parimaks täienduseks jääb Geoff, oleks play-offi jõudmine lagi.

Imeline, et sa nendest nimedest ühte teadsid. Samuti küllaltki veider, et see üks on neist kõige ebaolulisem.

                    LEEDS UNITED v Norwich City

                    3pm Saturday 5 August 2006

The opening day of the season always carries that special one-off feeling especially when it is a home game. For any fan, at whatever ground, the moving sea of colour gathering around the stadium is like meeting a long-lost friend. It’s comforting and spine-tingling at the same time, heightened by a sense of hope that this season is going to be one of glorious achievement after all, no matter what doubts are held about the team and manager. And the first view of the lush green pitch always causes a raised heartbeat in anticipation of a comfortable spirit-lifting winning start and an encouraging performance.

The fixture with Norwich looks to be an attractive opener, but it is a tough start for both clubs. And it’s not only Leeds fans who are looking to find trust in a manager; Norwich surprisingly struggled to adapt to the rigours of The Championship after relegation, and the knives were out for Nigel Worthington. For both managers, it is a big season: it could be their last at their current clubs, unless promotion is achieved.

Leeds will be looking to extend its remarkable unbeaten run on opening day. Our last opening day defeat was the 5-2 loss, away at Newcastle, on 19 August 1989, the year we won the old Division Two title. Since then, we have won nine and drawn seven and yet nine of those sixteen games were played away. This will be our eighth successive home game on opening day and we are looking for our sixth win in that time.

                    Leeds

Since that traumatic day in Cardiff, ten players have left the club and five have now arrived – including loanees, but excluding the anomaly that was Dave Livermore. The surgery to the squad was needed, as Steve Stone implied in an interview earlier this summer on BBC Radio Leeds. Although the first team squad, including the two loanees, numbers twenty-three, I still expect three or four new players to arrive – well, at least a centre-half, and a left back. I did think the midfield was complete with the addition of Westlake, but it seems there are strong links with Cisse, Prutton and Reid.

Like the South Stand, our midfield has been given more than just a lick of paint. The loss of Nicholls, though, is a huge blow, and it is hoped that this potential future captain is only out for up to the stated three months.

Cresswell continued absence remains a blow. He will have missed out on another pre-season at Elland Road – he signed in August last summer – and even when he comes back, he will have played just twelve league games in twelve months.

It is to be hoped that Horsfield is fit enough for two games a week. In the past two seasons, Horsfield has started just 31 games and come on as a sub 23 times, scoring 8 goals, so he has hardly been overplayed and should be physically fresh and highly motivated to earn that contract knowing he is going to be starting every game.

Blackwell had to address the key weaknesses in the team’s engine room, but buying more and hopefully better midfielders is only one half of the equation. It’s the pattern of play they are going to be asked to play that will be the tipping point in determining whether we are promoted or not. Individual flair wins games, but over a whole season, it is the consistent effectiveness of the whole team – playing as a team - that is key to promotion.

For the opening game Leeds are definitely missing long-term absentees, Kevin Nicholls and Richard Cresswell and there is some doubt over Neil Sullivan (dead leg), but both Stephen Crainey and Shaun Derry are expected to start even though they are yet to feature in any pre-season game. New loan signing Geoff Horsfield is also expected to make the starting eleven, but Ian Westlake is only completing his medical today and would be a surprise inclusion at kick-off.

In spite of the injuries, Blackwell faces an intriguing team selection:

It’s two from Butler, Gregan and Kilgallon at centre-half

It’s Crainey or Kilgallon at left back

It’s two from Derry, Bakke, Einarsson and Stone in central midfield

It’s Stone, Carole or Richardson on the right wing

It’s Lewis, Westlake or Carole on the left wing.

It’s Healy or Blake up front alongside Horsfield.

My preferred starting eleven, assuming all players are fit enough to start, is:

                    Sullivan

                    Kelly Gregan Kilgallon Crainey

                    Stone Derry Bakke Carole

                    Horsfield Blake

Subs: Warner, Butler, Lewis, Healy, Beckford

While I have no doubts about starting with Horsfield – his game is pretty straightforward – I am not convinced it is a good idea to throw a new midfielder straight into the battle without having trained with the squad. Besides, the Leeds crowd are not exactly too sympathetic to new players who struggle early in their careers.

                    Norwich

For Leeds fans we have the compensation of seeing plenty of transfer activity this summer, even if most of it has been the welcome clearing out of the deadwood.

In contrast, Norwich fans must be despairing. In spite of the fans lack of support for the manager – as reflected in public meetings, demonstrations inside and outside of the ground – the board continues to verbally back Worthington, out of an apparent belief in continuity and stability, and yet, to the frustration of the fans, and the skipper, Adam Drury, Delia Smith’s board are not investing money in the team. This despite the £15 million parachute income, plus £9 million from the sale of players – notably Dean Ashton and Damien Francis. Since relegation, Worthington has only spent about £6 million.

Worthington has admitted in the press he has blown this season’s transfer budget on the £700,000 signing, Lee Croft, from Manchester City – a good signing – yet the team lacks strength in depth, and especially lacks a lead striker. They have failed to sign acknowledged targets Rob Hulse, Geoff Horsfield and Steve Howard this summer.

However, the squad still has some talented players: Darren Huckerby, Robert Earnshaw, Paul McVeigh, Youssef Safri, Leon McKenzie, Rob Green and now the promising Lee Croft. On paper the team looks useful, especially with all the pace they have up front, yet the defence is slow and the midfield lacks quality.

A big problem for Norwich is their form away from Carrow Road. Since the turn of this year, they won just one of ten games on the road, losing five, drawing four, one of which was a 2-2 draw at Elland Road on 11 March. In that game, Norwich were poor in the first-half, yet came back strongly from a 1-0 half-time deficit to take the lead, and only an Eddie Lewis direct free kick in injury time rescued a point for us.

City are missing a few first team players for tomorrow: goalkeeper Rob Green (torn groin), midfielder Andy Hughes (groin), and defenders Rossi Jarvis (thigh) and Matthieu Loius-Jean (rehabilitating).

Worthington has been happy with how pre-season has gone, awarding his squad 8 out of 10 and with few comings and goings this summer they will have an advantage over Leeds in being able to field a stable first eleven. His one selection headache concerns whether to play new signing Croft – the player is two weeks behind in his pre-season training.

My guess at their expected line up (4-5-1/4-3-3) is:

                    Gallacher

                    Fleming, Shackell, Doherty, Drury

                    Huckerby, Robinson, Safri, McVeigh, McKenzie

                    Earnshaw

                    Prediction

Our opening day record should be totally irrelevant to predicting the outcome of this game.

Comparing our home form and Norwich’s away form of last season should put us as favourites. On the other hand, there is the fact that Norwich’s team is well settled in stark contrast to ourselves, and that could shade the game in favour of the Canaries. All good runs come to an end eventually, and tomorrow could well be that day. Norwich finished the season quite strongly, winning six and drawing one, of their last ten, whereas Leeds won only one and drew six of their last ten, excluding the play-offs.

I’ll go for an opening day defeat – Norwich winning 2-1 – on the basis that Leeds, as a team, does not seem yet ready for the start of the season.
