EXCLUSIVE: Newcastle stars fly in own bookies to Dubai to beat anti-betting laws

NEWCASTLE United stars flew out their own bookies to Dubai so they could enjoy a night at the races yesterday.

The players were able to place huge bets after bypassing strict anti-gambling laws.

And they spent the rest of their team-bonding week away boozing in exclusive nightclubs.

The only time they were unable to quench their thirst was on Wednesday - a dry night in Dubai because of a religious holiday.

Boss Graeme Souness organised the trip to the playboy capital of the Middle East to build spirits after a string of disastrous results.

And, it certainly seemed to have lifted the mood in the camp after the now departed Craig Bellamy\'s run-in with the club.

The players were delighted with their decision to import their own bookies. They quoted odds for them and placed bets on credit back at home.

Former England captain Alan Shearer, Lee Bowyer, Lauren Robert, Titus Bramble, Patrick Kluivert and Nicky Butt were among the racing party.

Backroom staff Dean Saunders and Terry McDermott joined them.

A Newcastle insider said: \"Most of the boys like a punt and we are talking big bucks. Most of them are millionaires and love the thrill of gambling.

\"So the thought of going to the races without having a flutter was out of the question.\"

Although frowned upon in Dubai, a state which is part of the United Arab Emirates, it is not illegal to place bets abroad. Many racegoers spend the whole meeting on the phone to bookies overseas.

The players downed free champagne as they cheered on jockeys including Frankie Dettori and Richard Hills from the exclusive Ascot Terrace of the Al Fahidi Fort racecourse.

No expense was spared to ensure the players had a good time during their week away.

Every night of their stay the club hired VIP sections in the desert city\'s top bars.



The players returned to one - The Boudoir, (pictured) which is decked out in lush scarlet velvet - on three nights running.

From behind their VIP cordon, they watched scantily clad Eastern European women dancing on tables and downed champagne. Frenchman Robert, 29, Bowyer, 28, and 29-year-old Dutch star Kluivert enjoyed \"dirty dancing\" with several women, mainly air stewardesses, in revealing tops.

Three minders hired to keep them out of trouble hand-picked the girls to join the players.

The insider said: \"They were told to make sure there were no photos with girls.

\"A lot of the players left wives and girlfriends at home and the club doesn\'t need any more scandal.\"

The team and backroom staff spent the week at the £300-a-night Emirates Towers Hotel.



Executives stayed a few miles away in the world\'s most expensive hotel, The Jumeirah Beach (pictured), where suites are £930 a night.

Every room in the 321 metre tall hotel, sculpted like the sail of an Arab dhow boat, has its own butler. A helipad on the roof was recently featured in an advert in which golfer Tiger Woods is seen driving into the sea below.

Chairman Freddie Shepherd and his deputy Doug Hall, who were once caught calling Geordie girls \"dogs\" and mocking fans who paid £40 for replica United shirts, each had a suite. They spent their days playing golf.

But not everyone joined in the fun. Kieron Dyer and Jermaine Jenas were among the team members away on international duty for Wednesday\'s England-Holland friendly.

A spokesman for Newcastle United refused to comment.

Well, our own spokesman certainly commented and told us that this is an absolute pile of crap.....

The players didn\'t down free champers at the gee-gees - as they weren\'t allowed to drink.

Neither was a turf accountant on the trip - but of course the Mirror\'s story is so shoddy that they can\'t decide whether a bookie was present or the players were phoning bets in....

The Mirror also got the wrong hotel for the Tiger Woods ad - that is not the Jumeirah but the Burj al Arab Hotel - shaped like a sail, not a breaking wave.

And as for boozing every night, make that two nights out of the week - with training every day.

As ever, we\'re not club apologists and question the value of making the trip at all, but we\'re more than happy to provide a different version of events to those cobbled together by the Mirror, with similar tales also appearing in the Sun.

Kuigi hollandlastel otsustas Huntelaar väikest intriigi punuda, tõid vanameister Big Al ja Bowyer siiski castle`i kastanid tulest välja
SJP-l loodetavasti üllatusi ei tule. Tänase, Hiius, nähtud mängu põhjal jättis parima mulje Robert, keda Suey hämmastavalt vara sisse vahetas. Kuid just Roberti teravus äärtes lükkas mängu jälle käima ... Tänks Kentile küüdi ja toetuse eest rasketel hetkedel, kui isand Bramble üritas niigi vähestel pealtvaatajatel infarkti tekitada

Nüüd pole siis muud kui pühapäeval selsiii kotti ja .... no unistada ikka ju võib

Bowyeri punane oli muidugi idiootsuse tipp nii Bowyerilt endalt (situatsioon oli ju suht ohutus kohas ja tahtlus valesti ajastatud ), Sueylt (teades et mehel on kollane all, SJP-l ei tule vähem pingeline andmine, pingil ju siiski veel mehi oli - jättes vahetuse õigel ajal tegemata) kui ka kohtunikult (tegelikult ju Bowyer ei puutunud palli). Loodetavasti saadakse kordusmänguks ka mängupilt paika, mis ausalt öeldes oli .... jube

Bramble ebastabiilsus on ikka õõvastav, suurepärasele täklingule, võib kindel olla, et järgneb lähiminutite jooksul võimas prohmaks, kus meid väravast võib päästa vaid vastaste küündimatus või Givenipoiss. It was just like the old days on Thursday night, as toon fans standing among a sub 20,000 crowd voiced their anger at the club hierarchy.

Chants of \"Freddie Shepherd is a w*nker\" were not immediately decipherable on the TV coverage but picked up by the occupants of the press box, while the strains of that old terrace favourite \"sack the board\" were clear to anyone.

At that stage, with United trailing, the Laurent Robert song was also aired, one or two folks having also begun the game with mention of a certain Celtic striker but seen their attempts at rabble rousing drowned out.

Had Robert stayed on the sidelines though, or the Dutch gone 2-0 up, it\'s a fair bet that the attentions of a section of the toon fans would have turned from the directors box to the visiting dugout.

It remains to be seen whether the less sweet-smelling Tyneside air will inspire Sunday\'s spectators into revolt should we fall behind to Chelsea.

We hope not, but fear that it\'s becoming increasingly inevitable.

The next three home games in three competitions for Souness could be decisive - speaking personally we\'d quite like us to win all three and are more than happy to try and vocally inspire the team on the field to do so.

What the people who don\'t appear to share that view hope to achieve is unclear, but we\'d be interested to know a) exactly how boards get sacked if one isn\'t the major shareholder and b) who exactly those moaning expect to come in and take up the challenge - be it manager or chairman.

Things aren\'t great at the moment but we\'ve know it worse - much, much worse. Others seem to have shorter memories....

To those going to the Chelsea, Heerenveen and Bolton games, give the lads a clap and try a song - who knows, you might even enjoy it.
