Luis Figo:
Newcastle United are confident of signing Portuguese midfielder Luis Figo after opening talks with the Real Madrid midfielder.

And Freddy Shepherd and Graeme Souness are also closing in on Turkish international Emre despite strong opposition from Everton.

Real Madrid are ready to release Figo as he is no longer an automatic choice at the Bernabeu and the 32 year-old international wants to end his playing career in the Premiership.

I am told there hasn\'t been a lot of interest from Premiership big boys Chelsea, Manchester United or Arsenal, and the way is open for a move to St James\' Park.

Indeed, I understand that talks are at an advanced stage and that Figo has indicated that he would be more than happy to join United, even though the best he would be able to hope for, as for as a European stage is concerned, would be the UEFA Cup providing Souness\' side can come through the three rounds of the Intertoto Cup.

I wrote in Chronicle Sport last night that I\'d heard a whsiper of some of the players Shepherd and Souness are targeting in the next few weeks and if they can pull off some of them the supporters will be delighted.

Well Figo was one of those players and even though he is 32 and not guaranteed first-team football with Real Madrid anymore, the former Barcelona star will still have plenty to offer in the Premiership.

As in the case of another former Barcelona big gun Patrick Kluivert, there would be no transfer fee for Figo but the player would pick up over £4m in wages per season.

And just as Kluivert did, Figo would get a one-year contract with the option on either side of another two.

However, unlike the the Dutchman, who was a massive disappointment in his 12 months at St James\' Park, United are confident that Figo would stay on for at least another season.

The Portuguese, who joined Real Madrid for a mouth-watering £37m from Barcelona exactly five years ago, still has a year of his contract to run in the Spanish capital.

He is currently in Angola with fellow Real Madrid colleague Ronaldo on a charity mission to highlight the sad plight of land-mine victims.

Shepherd and his deputy Douglas Hall have never been afraid to bring in some of the biggest names in football to St James\' Park and Figo fits into that category.

In the week that they made their first signing in the £6.5m Scott Parker, United were encouraged by the fact that only 3,000 fans have not renewed their season tickets which is not much higher than the annual wastage.

And there will be more good news if United see off Everton for Inter Milan midfielder Emre which they are confident they will do.

ROEDER RETURNS

Newcastle have moved quickly to bring in a new coach to the Academy following the departure of Director John Carver, with an announcement on Tuesday morning that Glenn Roeder had been appointed as Academy Manager.

Since standing down as West Ham boss in 2003 due to ill-health, Roeder has been working as an England scout and assessor, being spotted at White Hart Lane back in April.

He was also at our final home game of last season, being introduced to the crowd as the half-time hero and also sending back positive reports on messrs Milner and Bramble back to Sven.

And most recently he was noted in the stand at Windsor Park as Northern Ireland met Germany in a friendly international.

A return to first team management seems to have been on the cards for a while now, with Roeder\'s agent denying speculation that his client was to take over at the Chelsea Academy in September 2004, commenting that Glenn was waiting for the right opportunity to come along.

Roeder\'s managerial career began with a stint at Gillingham in 1992/93, moving from Priestfield to take charge at Watford until 1996.

A stint on Glenn Hoddle\'s England staff then followed, plus a misadventure at Turf Moor, where he went as number two to Chris Waddle - an experience that looks to have put Waddle off managing for life.

Roeder then moved on to West Ham where his appointment in succession to Harry Redknapp at the Hammers came in 2001, following a couple of years on the Upton Park coaching staff.

Roeder\'s arrival brings another face from the 1983-84 promotion season back onboard, with McDermott, Wharton and Beardsley all currently on the staff.
