Strike it Luque
By Alan Oliver, The Evening Chronicle
Newcastle United finally tied up the £10m signing of Deportivo La Coruna winger Albert Luque today.
And United believe that they have a \"good chance \" of bringing in Michael Owen from Real Madrid before next Wednesday\'s transfer window slams shut after a hush-hush meeting between Freddy Shepherd and the player\'s agent Tony Stephens yesterday.
But I expect there will be one major departure from St James\' Park in the next couple of days, with Jermaine Jenas joining Spurs in an £8m-plus deal.
The signing of Luque will excite United fans as Shepherd has waited patiently to get his man, but at the same time the supporters cannot wait to hear news of Owen.
And The Chronicle can reveal that Shepherd met Stephens yesterday so that the pair of them could discuss the Owen situation.
While Shepherd is reluctant to talk about Owen, I gather he was encouraged by what Stephens had to say and that he believes there is a \"good chance\" United will sign the England striker.
Certainly Shepherd has had to work hard to get Luque, with his opposite number at Deportivo Augusto Cesar Lendoiro insisting on only working at night so that he can have his traditional siesta.
Indeed, it wasn\'t until after midnight that United finally got the green light and they had a plane waiting for Luque on the tarmac at Santiago Airport.
Luque duly arrived at Newcastle Airport at 2.30 this morning where he was met by a United representative. Then at 7am he had his medical, including a couple of scans, at a local hospital.
United have already agreed a five-year deal with Luque, leaving only the international clearance to be sorted out so that he can be available to Graeme Souness for Sunday\'s game against Manchester United.
Shepherd said today: \"We have been delighted with the signings of Emre and Scott Parker and we have tried to go for more quality in Luque.
\"Indeed, in our negotiations with Real Madrid over Michael Owen, they have told us that they think Luque is the third best player in Spain.
\"What we are trying to do is to make sure there are no more bad buys at this football club.\"
If United fail to get Owen I understand they will go for Dirk Kuyt, the 25-year-old Dutch striker who has scored 69 goals in three seasons in the Eredivisie, firstly with Utrecht and latterly with his current club Feyenoord.
